Vic: Jail for addict who bashed his own granny for drug money

MELBOURNE, Dec 19 AAP - A heroin addict who bashed and tried to strangle his own grandmother
for $60 has been jailed for four and a half years.
Desperate for money for his next hit, Brett Andrew Dolan, 36, attacked his grandmother
Patricia Mary Inglis, 79, as she lay in her bed in her Braybrook home in March.
He grabbed his grandmother by the legs and dragged her down the bed before picking
her up and throwing her roughly back down, the Victorian Supreme Court was told.
He then hit her with a pillow and attempted to strangle her.
The grandmother eventually gave in and handed over $60.
Dolan spent the money on heroin.
A week later, Dolan rang his grandmother saying he was going to kill her for calling the police.
He was initially charged with attempted murder over the attack, but he pleaded guilty
to the lesser charges of robbery, recklessly causing injury, making a threat to kill and
possessing a drug of dependence.
Justice Elizabeth Curtain on Friday jailed Dolan despite Ms Inglis saying she was sorry
she'd called the police and fears she may never see her grandson again outside prison.
"These were crimes which offend any standard of decency, a cowardly assault on an elderly
woman, not only in her house, but in her bedroom," Justice Curtain said.
"Your elderly grandmother, who had given you love and support over the years and shelter
in your time of need, was robbed and assaulted in her own home so you could get money
for your next hit.
"It is difficult to imagine more reprehensible conduct."
In a statement to the court tendered earlier this week, the grandmother said: "I'm
feeling responsible that he is facing a possible prison sentence and I wish I had not
called the police at the time."
Dolan must serve a minimum of two years' prison.
